Program Objectives
My outreach
responsibility is in the poultry program areas of (1) 4-H/youth development
and (2) small and specialty flock program leadership.
In the 4-H/youth program development area I provide leadership for:
- 4-H Embryology project. This is mostly a school-enrichment project that enrolls over 50,000 youth in PA annually. My responsibility is to
conduct leader training, develop program resource materials, and coordinate
program activities at the State and National level.
- Traditional rearing and raising poultry projects that provide youth learning
opportunities in animal care and life skills. My responsibility is to provide
program management, volunteer leader and youth training, and program resource
development.
- Organize and conduct state and national 4-H poultry judging contests
as well as state 4-H contests in Avian Bowl, Chicken-cue Presentation, and
Turkey-cue Presentation.
The specialty poultry responsibilities
include program leadership and technical assistance to avian operators
other than commercial layer, broiler,
or turkey producers. This group includes breeders and owners of domestic
poultry as well as specialty avian flocks such as cage birds, game birds,
organic and
pastured poultry, ratites, and other small specialty flocks.
My teaching responsibilities
include coordination of all internships for the Animal Sciences major, advise students; teach
AN SC 421 "Poultry Evaluation and Selection," AN SC 426 "Poultry Judging," co-advise the Poultry Science Club, and help teach other courses and labs as
needed. I also teach a section for PA Governor's School for Agriculture.
Future Plans
Immediate plans include:
- Develop and implement a curriculum to support the 4-H poultry program with
the support of poultry curriculum subcommittees. Two 4-H
poultry curriculum subcommittees are functioning at the present time:
1. embryology subcommittee
2. raising, rearing and contest subcommittee
- Provide training in the 4-H poultry judging, avian bowl, Chicken-cue Presentation,
and Turkey-cue Presentation contests and develop a base of contestants in
these contest areas.
- Maintain an extension poultry resource Web site to enhance all of the poultry
extension program areas.
- Create an open communication network with and between extension professionals,
avian associations, and agencies working with youth poultry and the specialty
avian industries.
- Develop funding options to support the 4-H youth poultry programs.
1. Fully support state 4-H poultry contests and contests representing PA
at National events.
2. Develop a mini grant program to help local programs enhance existing
and/or develop new 4-H poultry efforts
- Increase the number of undergraduate students with poultry interest at
University Park campus.
