Life at Penn State
Life in the Barns
Waking up to dairy silos outlined by a multicolored sunrise is not what most college students describe outside of their windows. However, I have opened my blinds many mornings to find this sight. Living in the barns has enabled me to work with professors and gain valuable experience for internships and full-time employment. It has also given me the opportunity to live with other students who have similar interests and goals. As a student who has lived in dorms, I would not trade my room in the barn for any other living situation
Academic Life in Poultry Science
Working in the
poultry industry is something that, just a few years ago, would never
have entered my mind. But after actually having some contact with the
industry, I began to see that it was full of opportunities. Penn State's
Animal Science courses are challenging and geared to promote the practical
skills desired by employers in the industry. Study time and lab time are
both required to be successful in this major, however, the time spent
in studying has enabled me to be more successful in my internships. Also,
most professors and teaching assistants have open doors to questions,
and this has also been extremely helpful.
Time off of the Farm
Yes, as much as I love poultry and living at the farm, I do, on occasion, leave the farm and have a good time. And, because State College is near, I don't have to go too far. In conjunction with the University, there are countless clubs, intramural sports, a full year of Division I athletic events, theatre productions, and countless events at the Bryce Jordan Center. In the surrounding areas there are ski slopes, quality riding stables, clubs, movie theaters, and restaurants. At a college seminar that I attended, someone said that students who are bored in college are probably boring people. That is very applicable here at Penn State.
